Proving you are vaccinated

Being asked to prove you have received a COVID-19 vaccine? Want to know what evidence you can ask for regarding the vaccination status of an employee or worker?

Proof of your vaccinations

There are two ways of proving you have had a COVID-19 vaccine. Both are free and available online through Services Australia.

1. Immunisation history statement

Vaccinations are recorded on your immunisation history statement.

Your vaccination provider needs to report your vaccination information to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) before it will appear on your statement. It can take up to 10 days for your vaccination provider to update the AIR. If your COVID-19 vaccinations aren’t showing after 10 days, or can’t be updated by the provider, call the AIR.

You can get a copy of your immunisation history statement on:

Instructions are available on the Services Australia website.

2. COVID-19 digital certificate

Once you’ve had all doses of an approved vaccine, you’ll be able to access your COVID-19 digital certificate. It shows only your COVID-19 vaccinations.

You can download your COVID-19 digital certificate using:

3.Adding your digital certificate to a state or territory check-in app

You can now share your certificate with any of the following:

Instructions on how to do this are available on the Services Australia website.

Proof of a medical exemption

If you or your worker is unable to receive a COVID-19 vaccine due to a medical reason you may need to obtain a certificate from a medical practitioner proving this.

The Australian Immunisation Register provides a medical exemption form that your medical practitioner can complete. You may be required to provide this to prove your exemption from any vaccination requirements mandated by local public health orders or a company policy.

There may also be circumstances in which you or your workers may need a temporary exemption from receiving a COVID19 vaccination.

A temporary exemption may be granted due to, for example, undergoing major surgery or hospital admission for a serious illness.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) have developed guidance regarding medical conditions that may warrant a temporary medical exemption for COVID-19 vaccines.

Further information

  • The role of COVID-19 vaccinations and your current obligations can be confusing. HIA has developed information for members tailored to the residential building industry that may be of assistance.
